If your college student is renting an off-campus apartment or house while away at school consider purchasing renters insurance to protect their personal property, such as a computer, television, stereo, bicycle or furniture, in the event that it is damaged, destroyed or stolen. Your homeowners insurance may not cover your student’s personal property, if he or she lives off campus. Parents should check their policy or contact their insurance agent to see if renters insurance is right for their son or daughter who is away at school. The premiums for renter’s insurance average between $15 and $30 per month depending on the location and size of the rental unit and the policyholder’s possessions. You may think that renters, who do not actually own the building or property, do not need any coverage. But I believe that a renters insurance policy is good for both tenants and renters. So why do I, on a frugal living website, believe that it is worth it to pick up another bill? Renters policies are usually pretty cheap. Since they do not actually cover the building or property, these policies do not cost all that much. You may be able to find adequate coverage for $20 a month!
