Who Benefits From Bad Times? Well America, it looks like Happy Times are not exactly here again. But even the worst economic downturns in history have produced winners as well as losers. Do not misunderstand my tone. Nobody would like to regain the value of a retirement fund more than I would. It is just very important to point out that downturns can also open up windows of opportunity as well as financial hardship. Let us revisit history in order to try and understand the present. Great Depression Success Stories During the great depression, many companies that continued to aggressively promote their products or services did very well. While other firms cut back because of decreased spending, these companies took the opportunity to advertise a lot. For these companies, when the going got tough, it was no time for the tough to back down! People who have cash or a supply of inexpensive credit tend to be able to take advantage of economic downturns. So, in addition to advertising, companies and individuals who could take advantage of cheaper prices (deflation) could take advantage of investments or personal purchases. Some Things Are Cheaper Now Because Of The Recession While some things, [...]

Well, now there is no doubt about the fact that the US, and the world, is enduring an economic downturn. We have been watching financial leaders and politicians deny if long enough, but even they are admitting it now. However, as much as we are all struggling to watch our expenses and keep our savings, we do find that some people do ok during a recession, and some people even prosper! What is the difference between those that can barely survive the crisis, and those that make out ok? I think the difference is being, just like a Boy Scout, prepared! Look for some practical tips here: Surviving a Recession. It is mostly downhome advice like saving money, reducing debt and preparing yourself for a job loss. But it also contains some unique tips on making some income during unemployment with freelance jobs that you may not have thought of. No related posts.
Remember the American Dream? Wast it just a dream of prosperity and a white picket fence? The American middle class, who bought into it, seem to be vanishing as fast as their mortgages. In 1970, GM was the largest American employer of high school educated people with an average wage of $17.50 an hour. Today, 38 years later, Wal-mart is the nation’s largest employer. Well, some stuff increases our contentment, like an air conditioned roof over our head, but can that roof cover 1700 square feet instead of 3400 square feet? I think so. Can a $10 fan allow us to turn our thermostat up a couple of degrees so we are still comfortable? Yes, it can. And do we really need a big, energy hog projection tv? No, we really don’t. On the other hand, we really do need some sort of roof over our [...]
