Who Wants To Give Senior Citizens A Price Break? Lots of older people have to make do on limited incomes. As a sign of respect for elders, and as a good public relations strategy, many companies offer good senior citizens discounts. Some of these are well know, but some have not been that well publicized at all. Elderly people can get the discounts, but they have to ask for them! You may wonder why companies would have hidden or secret senior discounts. Some may not want to promote themselves as a company for older people because they want to present a youthful image. However, they do offer price breaks and deals for the over 65 crowd. Lots Of Time, You Have To Ask For Over Age Discounts! Again, some companies or stores do not promote the discounts. We learned about a lot of these offers because we got feedback from people who asked. Next time you are shopping, banking, booking a trip, or eating out, ask if you will get rewarded for your grey hair. You should! Senior Travel Discounts Many people dream of travel during retirement. They may want to visit new places, or they may just want to [...]

Do You Always Spend More Than Your Budget At Grocery Stores? I know that I can count on food and other grocery expenses every month. We all have to eat and feed our families, right? However, I also have always had trouble with exceeding my planned grocery budget. I have joked that there must be some sort of drug in the air at the market to force me to buy things I had not planned on picking up. Let me mention that I have never thought people should stick to a hard and fast grocery list. You may do better when you can shop the sales, take advantage of bargains, or allow yourself some flexibility so you can try something new! However, I often return home to put away my groceries, and then find I did not really get any bargain at all. Grocery Stores Know Psychology! Our brain appears to be susceptible to “signals”, and these signals allow us to be primed to purchase things. You may think that your weekly trip to the market a fairly mindless activity, but this could not be further from the truth! Mark Lindstrom, author of the book Brainwashed, tells us exactly how [...]

Fast Food At Home Saves Time and Money! I read some frugal food advice today on one of the mega websites, and it was actually one of my good habits. If you find that you are eating out a lot just because you lack the time or energy to prepare meals at home, it may be time to turn your kitchen into your very own fast food restaurant. By that, I do not mean you should install a deep fryer or burger grill. But what I mean is that it is not that hard to take some time every week or two to prepare some handy meals that can be frozen and finished off in minutes. Some people hesitate to do this becauise the kids do not like leftovers, or because they are afraid the menu will get boring. But with some experience and creativity, you can solve these problems so that nobody will even know you are pulling prepared food from the freezer or fridge! A lot of meals can be pre-prepared and frozen. If you are making a stir-fry, pasta, baked chicken, or a roast, why not double or triple the recipe. You can store the extra meals in [...]

Every time I visit the grocery store, it seems as if the prices have gone up. It is more important than ever, in a weak economy, to control those trips and put a lid on impulse buys. These are tips that I use, or ones that I have picked up from Frugal Pig readers and my friends. If you have any more cheap grocery shopping tips, feel free to add them to the contents! Can you avoid taking anybody else with you? Of course, you will want to get your spouse’s and kid’s input when you plan a grocery shopping trip. But I find that if I take another family member with me, it is much harder to control my spending. We, sort of, give each other permission to impulse buy. Try not to buy too much. OK, if cans of tuna are on sale, and you know you use them all the time, it is probably a good idea to stock up. But you need to resist overbuying fresh produce that will spoil. I have probably thrown out as much bread lettuce as I’ve eatern, and I am really trying to stop the waste. Check the sales. I know that [...]

Cheap Fish Recipe with Tuna We are all told to eat more fish, but sometimes that seafood counter has some pretty expensive prices. In order to be healthy, and get our share of fish, we need to turn to good old canned tuna and salmon. But tuna with mayo gets old after awhile. So let’s dress it up with a great recipe for tuna cakes. These are very similar to crab cakes, but cheap and easy to make! By the way, a good way to handle your grocery budget in a frugal way, is to look for tuna and salmon on sale. We found this recipe on CheapSkateLiving.org — Tuna Croquettes Recipe So just visit that page, because we don’t see the need to waste time and repost it here. frugal, food, groceries, money, cheap Technorati Tags: frugal, food, groceries, money, cheapNo related posts.
Make Cheap and Easy Tacos and Tortillas Most taco recipes do not include the tortillas. But I learned this from one of the most frugal cooks I ever met, and in my humble opinion, nothing tastes better then fresh tortilla right out of the pan. Compare fresh tortillas to packaged tortillas. Its like the difference between fresh bread and day old bread! And of course, it is much cheaper to make tortillas then it is to purchase them. On the other hand, time is money, and if you are pressed for time, don’t feel guilty about buying a package of tortillas either. Note: I added another cheap recipe for bisquick tortillas to the end of this post. The recipe here is for 12 tacos, so this may be two meals. If that is too much for your family, you can freeze the rest in a a freezer bag or use them for lunches the next day. Wheat Tortillas You Need: 4 Cups Flour, 2 tsp. salt, 4 tsp baking powder, 2 tbl oil, approx. 1 1/2 cup warm water. Stir all the dry ingredients together. Then knead in the oil and add the water until you have a soft, but [...]
