Credit Misuse Is The Problem Having a credit card is not the problem with most people who get into financial trouble. Misuse of credit cards is usually on of the problems though! If you handle your credit cards the right way, they can improve your financial security and comfort. If you misuse them, they can make you miserable. At the Frugal Pig, we are quite aware that stuff happens. There may be cases where misuse is warranted, but they should probably fall in the category of absolutely needing to fix your car so you can get to work, or needing dental servies right now. If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation, previous credit card misuse, over frivolous things, will only make your situation worse. But mostly, the difference between a mediocre and a great credit score, comes down to small things. You can pay all of your bills on time, have money in the bank, and still be paying too much for credit. Maxing Out Your Cards (Or Coming Close) If you are constantly charging, and making low payments, you will find yourself coming close to using up your available credit. You may even charge an amount that [...]

Can You Pay Off Your Credit Cards? The thought of paying off high interest credit cards may make you wince. I know that most of the people around here have been in that position from time to time. Any time we made progress, something seemed to come up that wiped out months of careful payments in one swipe of our plastic. However, we have heard of some great success stories, and we thought we would share Julia’s story! A Modest Income and 0 Credit Card Debt Julia did not win the lottery or inherit a fortune either. In fact, she is a fairly young teacher who only makes about $42,000 a year. And that amount is before taxes, health insurance, retirement, and other things that get taken out of her paycheck. She figures that her monthly, after withholding pay is about $2500. She had a fixed rent of $750 a month, plus a variety of uitlity bills (power, phone, Internet, cable TV) that added another $500 to that. Add in a car payment and car insurance of $400. So you see, out of that twenty-five hundred a month, she really only had $850 left to pay for groceries, entertainment, and [...]

Can You Still Reduce Credit Card Interest Rates Today? Despite a lot of optimistic articles on this subject, I have to say it is a little tougher to get a large credit card reduction that it was a few years ago. When I called my own credit card company, for one of those cards that had its interest raised in one of those apparently random moves we see so often these days, I had to stay on the phone quite a while, provide some good arguments, and accept a miserly (in my opinion) compromise. Still, even a fairly small reduction in interest rates may make a big difference for those peope who carry a balance. It is probably worth a half hour to gather your ammunition, wait on hold, and make your case. For an example, let us say you have a $5,000 balance on one credit card. If you make $200 payments at a modest 14% interest rate (which used to be common), it will take you 30 months to pay it off. If your interest rate is 28%, which is not that uncommon today, you will be sending those two hundred dollar payments for 38 months. In this case, [...]

Is Any Debt A Good Debt? We talk a lot about paying off debt. We really hate high credit card balances because they tend to be for things that are not really tangible or long lasting, and those rates can really run out of control. There has been a lot of talk about the mortgage crisis, but I am sure that credit cards have gotten a lot more people in financial trouble with little to show for their expenses. Emergency Credit Of course, it is better to be able to pay for an emergency bill with your savings. But we, of all people, understand that sometimes troubles just seem to pile up. It is not always possible to choose between filling a cavity and getting your car repaired. Your dental problems could just become worse if you neglect the cavity, but you may need your car to get to work. So sometimes, the cost of debt will be less than the cost of waiting for a service. In that case, you should probably just go ahead and charge it. Long Term Goals Most experts advise us that it is ok to borrow for a long term goal. An affordable home [...]

So can you spare a buck a day? If so, maybe you can apply an extra $30 a month to your credit card bill. If so, you will be paying to finance $360 a year less, which with interest rates approaching 27% on some cards can be substantial! This is especially true if you have only been paying the minimum balance and found that you are not getting anywhere trying to pay off your balances. This same approach can also work on car loans and some mortgages. Look at the monthly payment as a minimum and try to kick in a bit extra when you can. I am here to tell you, but nothing is so satisfying as watching those balances decline so you can think about the day when you do not have monthly loan balances to make payments on! In addition to saving money in the long run, you will also reduce the length of time it takes to pay the bill off. So go ahead and buy the cheap coffee instead of the grande latte, and get that debt paid off! If you haven’t been here already, why not visit our online debt payoff calculator and see [...]

How Long To Pay Off Debt With Minimum Payments? You may wonder how long it will take to pay off a credit card or other unsecured loan by making the minimum payment. Well, I have to tell you that if have run up a substantial balance, let’s say a few thousand dollars, it will take awhile if you can manage it at all. Let’s say you have a fairly moderate $3500 balance. And lets say your interest rate is reasonable, say 14%. FREE ONLINE DEBT PAYOFF CALCULATOR Well, if you make $85 a month payments, it can take 4 and a half years, and you will have paid out almost $1200 on interest on that $3500 of debt! If you can swing $150 a month payments, you can reduce your payoff time to about 2 1/3 years, and almost cut the interest in half. Of course, if you get sucked into the extra services, like credit protection, that the companies try to tack onto your bill, a minimum payment will make even less progress. debt, loans, credit card, debt payoff, debt reduction, bad credit Technorati Tags: debt, loans, credit card, debt payoff, debt reduction, bad creditNo related posts.
