Who Benefits From Bad Times? Well America, it looks like Happy Times are not exactly here again. But even the worst economic downturns in history have produced winners as well as losers. Do not misunderstand my tone. Nobody would like to regain the value of a retirement fund more than I would. It is just very important to point out that downturns can also open up windows of opportunity as well as financial hardship. Let us revisit history in order to try and understand the present. Great Depression Success Stories During the great depression, many companies that continued to aggressively promote their products or services did very well. While other firms cut back because of decreased spending, these companies took the opportunity to advertise a lot. For these companies, when the going got tough, it was no time for the tough to back down! People who have cash or a supply of inexpensive credit tend to be able to take advantage of economic downturns. So, in addition to advertising, companies and individuals who could take advantage of cheaper prices (deflation) could take advantage of investments or personal purchases. Some Things Are Cheaper Now Because Of The Recession While some things, [...]

Are Bargain Pool Supplies A Good Deal? This is sort of a rant. I have gone back to buying more expensive pool supplies (like santizer) at pool stores. I do not buy them at the local hardware store or the “Megalo-Mart” (Mart of Wal) any more. They may seem cheaper, but I found better ways to save money on swimming pool supplies. Look at an example. A tub of chlorine tabs may only cost $12 at your local discount store. It may cost $30 at your pool supply store. But I have discovered that the more expensive tabs tend to last about a week. The cheaper tabs seem to turn to muck after about a day, plus they leave a lot of cloudy residue. Since my experience with the more expensive chlorine tabs is, at least, seven times better – and they only cost about twice as much, I have made up my mind to buy the more expensive ones. But that doesn’t mean you have to always buy expensive pool supplies. What is shock? It is chlorine! Sometimes you can use plain bottles of household bleach to shock your pool. The concentration of grocery store bleach will be less, [...]

Some Years it is Tough to Be Santa! This will be a tough year for many families. As I am writing this, I am thinking about the stack of property tax bills on my counter, and also the holiday gifts that my kids want. This may seem like a bad time to think about being frugal, but it is probably one of the best times. So how can I cut some expenses, like holiday gift giving, while sticking to a budget. A Holday Gift Budget is Important! Before you buy anything, write down a realistic budget. If you can set aside $300 or $1,000, I would suggest taking that amount of money out in cash. It is a lot easier to stick to your budget if you have to spend real money instead of just swiping plastic at the register. If you cannot use cash, try to keep a register of your expenses. The act of keeping a tally and writing it down will help. So Where Can We Find Cheap Gifts that are Still Nice? I have written about this before, but thrift stores can be gold mines of inexpensive gifts. You will also be doing triple duty with [...]

Do You Need some Cheap Grocery Shopping Ideas? We found a great place to read, and to share, some great ideas for frugal food shopping! One of our sister websites, Frugal Mavens, is running a couple of contests which should help us all brainstorm and save money every week. Please visit before you make up your next grocery list! Cheap Meal Planning Contest This one involves meal planning for one dinner. The dinner should be healthy, tasty, and attractive to the tastes of a family with adults and kids. Entries should keep the per-person cost of each meal fairly low just to demonstrate that thrifty cooks can still provide great meals! See the Cheap Meal Plan Tips Contest Here! Cheap Weekly Grocery Shopping This contest is more complex, so you may want to start with the first one. You must lay out a week’s grocery shopping for food that does not cost more than $150. The editor’s example cost about $100. With this list, you mus provide 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 dinners, and 5 snacks for a family of 4. Again, meals should be balanced and healthy, tasty, and something that you believe kids or adults would enjoy. See [...]

Every time I visit the grocery store, it seems as if the prices have gone up. It is more important than ever, in a weak economy, to control those trips and put a lid on impulse buys. These are tips that I use, or ones that I have picked up from Frugal Pig readers and my friends. If you have any more cheap grocery shopping tips, feel free to add them to the contents! Can you avoid taking anybody else with you? Of course, you will want to get your spouse’s and kid’s input when you plan a grocery shopping trip. But I find that if I take another family member with me, it is much harder to control my spending. We, sort of, give each other permission to impulse buy. Try not to buy too much. OK, if cans of tuna are on sale, and you know you use them all the time, it is probably a good idea to stock up. But you need to resist overbuying fresh produce that will spoil. I have probably thrown out as much bread lettuce as I’ve eatern, and I am really trying to stop the waste. Check the sales. I know that [...]

Cheap Fish Recipe with Tuna We are all told to eat more fish, but sometimes that seafood counter has some pretty expensive prices. In order to be healthy, and get our share of fish, we need to turn to good old canned tuna and salmon. But tuna with mayo gets old after awhile. So let’s dress it up with a great recipe for tuna cakes. These are very similar to crab cakes, but cheap and easy to make! By the way, a good way to handle your grocery budget in a frugal way, is to look for tuna and salmon on sale.
