Make Some Money

Notice that I did not title this post – How to Make Lots Of Money Fast – because I honestly do no know any real way to do that. I do know how to earn money by working, and I do also know some tested ways to raise some extra money in a bind.

Even though the focus of this website is on saving money and being prudent with finances, I cannot ignore the fact that with rising unemployment, few raises, and spiking credit interest rates, sometimes we just need MORE MONEY!

Notice that none of these suggestions include going out and getting a 2nd job. I assume that most of you are having enough fun juggling one job and a family like I am!

EBAY – I have to say that this is one of the first ways that I ever worked online. In fact, I started by clearning out old videos and reselling them on the largest online auction website. When all of my unwanted videos, books, and even old video games were cleaned out, I started scouting garage sales and second hand stores for more!

Do some research. You can sign up for a free account, and research how much things have sold for in the past (completed items). Make sure you note shipping and packing charges too, though if you can use media mail, postage is fairly low.

I know that I was selling books and videos for 1.99 + 5.00 in shipping charges. I found them at garage sales for .50 – 1.00 each, and probably spent about $2 on packaging and shipping.  So I could make about $4 each, which was payment for my time. To be efficient, I tried to stay organized and list a few dozen at a time.

If you can list a dozen one day, and then close them on another day, you won’t get rich, but you can make an extra $50 for a couple of hours of work. Keep in mind that Paypal does charge a small listing fee, and then a final value fee when the item sells. Consider that when you price your items. Also, you don’t have to sell books and videos like I did. I mention them because they are common, pretty easy to ship, and something I was familiar with.

Paid Surveys – Again, I don’t think anybody gets rich from these, but with some attention to your work, you can use your free time to make extra money. Though some surveys only pay a dollar or two, some average $30 each or more.

This is one of the more popular websites for paid surveys – Paid Surveys, Etc. It does charge a fee for access. But it has an 8 week money back guarantee. The author actually made a living with surveys before producing this information, but never claims that it didn’t take some effort!

Mystery Shopping – I had a friend who made $1,500 one summer just by performing mystery shopping jobs. She also got some great free meals and other goodies from stores she worked at. Another stay at home mom I spoke to, was paid to put signs on her car in a get paid to drive program.
