Do Fans Reduce Energy Bills?

If you live in a hot climate like I do, or even a place where the summers get very warm, a fan really can help you stay cooler in the summer while using less energy for your A/C. Keep in mind, though, that fans cool off people by blowing air on our skin. They don’t really make a room cooler. So it is a good idea to shut the fans off in rooms that are not in use.

However, this is a big advantage. Most of us in hot climates have central air, so our whole house must be cooled if a room is cooled. Of course you can go around shutting vents, but that is probably not something you do.

And a fan does not take that much power to run, and can probably be operated for pennies a day. So a room that would only be comfortable at 72 degrees without a fan could be comfortable at 79 degrees with a fan. In fact, I’d say you could raise your thermastat about 5 degrees if you had a fan.

Now ceiling fans may cost $50 – $100 or more, and you may have to pay somebody that much, or more, to install one as well. So it may take a while to recoup your investment if you outfit your whole home, but it is a longer term strategy. If you can find an independent electrician, he or she may be willing to cut you a deal if you purchase your own fans and have multiple fans installed at the same time.

Another big advantage of ceiling fans is that they look great! A nice fan really can improve the way a room looks as much as any nice piece of furniture. This can be a very inexpensive and useful way to make your home look better, and even increase its resale potential.

Don’t Forget Portable Fans!

If you are concerned about the expense of installing a lot of ceiling fans, you can choose from a variety of portable fans. I have seen large fans, some that even have a moving top. Now you are bringing the price way down, maybe $20 – $40, and these do not have to be installed!
