Do You Need Frugal Holiday Gift Ideas? We have already written an article about frugal gift ideas that people actually like. We have also spent time warning our readers about the dangers of running up a lot of holiday debt. However, in case you are a new reader who has not taken the time to explore old articles, it might be a good time to revisit this topic! Black Friday? Cyber Monday? Hold On! With all of the ads for black Friday, cyber Monday, etc. on TV, it is a tough time to hold onto our wallets. You may really want to please everybody on your gift list, and it can be hard to come up with cheap Christmas gifts for grandchildren, affordable presents for your coworkers, and something special for your spouse! Let me just mention that these special savings days may not always be the best time to find deals. A lot of stores do run super cheap specials, but they have some items in very limited numbers. The deals do attract people into the store, but the store management is hoping you will come in and make a lot of impulsive purchases. Impulse gift purchases are seldom [...]

How To Save Money On Ink For Your Printer I remember, not so long ago, when people would purchase new printers every time they ran out of ink. The printers were cheap. The ink was very expensive. And they could purchase a new printer, with ink cartridges, for less than they could buy replacement ink for. Some things have changed. The big printer companies caught on, so they started including mini cartridges in new printer boxes. If you decide to buy a more expensive printer, this is also not a reasonable alternative. However, there are still some ways to save money on printer ink. Why Is Printer Ink Expensive? I probably do not have to tell you that printer ink is really expensive. If you priced it out, per gallon, you would find it costs hundreds of dollars a gallon. Compare that to the price of gasoline or milk! I think that part of the price is to compensate companies for all of the research and development that goes into making their printers these days. I doubt that the actual materials that go into those little cartridges justify the cost. Refills: You can find a lot of shops that refill [...]

Go Back To School Without Going Broke! It’s that back-to-school time again. We all face the next school year with a mixture of anticipation and regret. The magical summertime days seem to roll by too fast, and yet we are eager to make progress and advance to the next steps. I also tend to associate back to school with a time of large expenses. Of course, we have the traditional shopping for new clothes and school supplies. As soon as school starts, I seem to get bombarded with fees and dues and fund raisers too. The shopping is concentrated, but all the fees tend to add up and nickle and dime me to broke-dom! Consider some tips to go back to school in thrifty style! Some of these may even be fun. Evaluate Wardrobes For Back To School Shopping, Giving Away, Or Selling Honestly, this is a bit of advice I tend to find difficult, and yet it really does save money. Be sure to go through closets and dressers to set aside clothes that do not fit or are too worn for use. When you have a nice pile of discards, figure out how to use them. Yes, I [...]

Can You Kids Handle Money? One of the most valuable lessons you can teach your child is how to handle money. When they get to be teenagers is when money issues really began to surface. As we all know teens love to shop. Just like the rest of us they do want to save money – so they get can get even more stuff, but research shows teens are extremely brand-loyal and label conscious. Here some good tips on how to teach your teen to be frugal but still make the desired fashion statement. Use the internet to your advantage – The best way to save at mall stores they like to frequent is to sign up for the e-mail newsletters. The mall itself and many of the popular stores send out coupons, special deals and sales notifications. I am a big Payless shopper and they frequently offer 20 percent coupons online that can be used at the store. You can print them out as many times as you like. Also, tell your kids about sites that have bargains on the things they are interested in. Sites like Alice.com, Coupons.com, BeCentsAble.net, CouponSherpa.com, FatWallet.com, and RetailMeNot.com where they can find savings [...]

You Don’t Have To Sneak Around To Thrift Shop Anymore Recent economic troubles have stressed out a lot of consumers, but may actually have some positive benefits. They have made us more aware of our spending habits, more concerned about unsecured debt, eager to recycle and reuse, and they have also caused a lot of people to rediscover thrift shops. What are thrift shops. It is sort of a polite term for second hand stores. You may picture a Good WIll or Salvation Army store, and these are good places to start. But some thrift shops, like Plato’s Closet, have franchised and become quite trendy! Instead of hiding the fact that you found a new winter coat for Junior or a blouse for yourself at a second hand store, you may actually brag about it. Some may still turn up their noses, but many will commend you for your frugal shopping habits! Your email: No related posts. Related posts brought to you by Yet Another Related Posts Plugin.

How About Some Free Alternative Energy? We have noticed, and applaud, the fact that the frugal movement, also tends to be a green movement as well. We tend to place a large emphasis on recycling, making do, and finding sources of clean, cheap, and renewable power. That is why, we think, our articles on making electricity at home always generate a lot of interest and feedback. Solar and Wind DIY (Do It Yourself) In the past, we mentioned Do It YourSelf Power, which concentrates on wind and solar power that can supplement (or replace) your on-grid energy supplies from the power company. The systems were fairly easy and cheap to build, and some of our readers had a great time experimenting with it. MagiWork Electromagnetic Energy Now we are seeing a new idea pop up, and that is for home electromagnetic energy systems. The systems are designed to be built by people who are not professional engineers, or even overly technical. They generate absolutely free energy, and they can work on their own or as a supplement to other power sources. We invite you to take a moment to learn more about Magiwork Magnetic Electricity Systems here. The page is [...]

What’s In? Thrift or Second Hand Stores, That’s What! I have frequented thrift stores for years. I have bought all sorts of stuff, and even clothes for myself and my kids. I also loved the treasure hunt of sorting through somebody else’s discards. But I never really liked to talk about it too much. If anybody ever complemented my kid’s rain coat or my new blouse, I certainly changed the subject before the conversation got around to where I had purchased the item! In my circles, it was awesome to donate to second hand stores, like The Salvation Army, but not so hot to talk about buying things there. Boy, has that changed in the last few years. Plato’s Closet, the name brand used clothing store for teens and young adults, has made it cool to wear used! My own brand conscious teen daughter has no problem picking up a gently used name brand top or pair of jeans for $16 instead of buying it new in the mall for $60. I would like to credit this to my good example, but I’m pretty sure it has more to do with the fact that her friends think it is ok. [...]

Is Frugality In? The recession may have bred a new brand of American consumer, or rather anti-consumer. Apparently consumption is out and anti-consumerism is in. We did lose millions of jobs in the past several months, but many people who are adopting a frugal lifestyle still have a steady job which they do not fear losing. But they did lose wealth. Either investments dropped, housing values sank, savings rates plunged, or they certainly knew people who had that experience. Even if the value of assets are starting to climb back up, many Americans got the wake up call, and they are really working on spending less and saving more! This is not all just my opinion, though I am aware of this trend. I see it around me though I live in a middle class to upper middle class suburban area. Yahoo Finance published an AP servey of top US economists which supports this conclusion. Two thirds of American economists, who study consumer behavior agreed that cheap is in! Baby boomers may have been a particularly hard hit group. For most of their working lives, assets climbed at a steady pace. But over the last several years, they lost assets. Wealth [...]

What Should You Buy in Bulk to Save Money? It must be obvious that you should only buy things in bulk if you are sure you will use them up and if you have a place to store them. This may be a good time to clean and organize your garage so you have a place to store your bulk purchases. Of course, things that will not spoil quickly are always better candidates for bulk buying. Bulk milk would not do much good for most of us, but bulk toilet paper would probay work out well. You do not have to shop at the big bulk stores to buy in bulk either. These days, regular grocery stores offer larger sizes at a saving. This is convenient if you only want to make a few bulk purchases. Cooperative Bulk Buying Here are some good bulk purchases ideas. Keep in mind, these may not work out for you. If you do not have storage space, a 48 pack of toilet paper may be tough to stash away. One clever idea that some of my neighbors started is to buy some items in bulk in a cooperative fashion. Everybody can take their 8 [...]

OMG – Santa’s Coming! Are you Ready with Last Minute Inexpensive Gift Ideas? It is not too late to come up with some frugal Christmas gifts. Sure, you’ve only got $75 left in your checking account until payday, and you still haven’t bought anything for Aunt Midge or that office coworker who surprised you with a gift last night. But it isn’t too late! Regifting is the New Cool! Regifting is totally fine, but you just have to be careful about it. If Aunt Midge knitted you a sweater last year, it had better not show up as a gift anywhere she is likely to be. You certainly do not want to break the spirit of the season by hurting somebody’s feelings. But it is absolutely ok for you to look through your closet or pantry for stored picture frames, bottles of wine, coffee mugs, etc., and to pass them on. Use judgement, make sure they are not open and unused, and wrap them nicely. But beyond that, you are actually passing on something you do not use to somebody who might. Make Your Own Gift Baskets It is really very easy to make some very nice gift baskets that [...]
