How Can You Save $150 – $200 On Food This Month? Even though we all have to buy groceries every month, our food bill is actually one of our most flexible expenses. Most US families really can reduce their bills without going hungry, suffering inconvenience, or learning how to raise their own chickens! Plan Ahead For Lower Food Costs! There are many things we can prepare in minutes that we tend to buy in already prepared, more expensive, and often – less healthy versions. In addition, we are not always shopping in the right place or buying the right things. Slash Your Food Bill By Doing Some Of The Following Serve breakfast for dinner once a week. Most families enjoy a hearty breakfast, but do not have time for it in the morning. Go ahead and surprise your family with omelets, french toast, or pancakes once a week. These can all be prepared in a very healthy manner, and by replacing meat with eggs, you will save money. Try having Meatless Monday or Tofu Tuesday. There are so many great vegetarian recipes for everything from veggie lasagna to tofu stir fry. Save money by eliminating meat once a week. You [...]

Do You Always Spend More Than Your Budget At Grocery Stores? I know that I can count on food and other grocery expenses every month. We all have to eat and feed our families, right? However, I also have always had trouble with exceeding my planned grocery budget. I have joked that there must be some sort of drug in the air at the market to force me to buy things I had not planned on picking up. Let me mention that I have never thought people should stick to a hard and fast grocery list. You may do better when you can shop the sales, take advantage of bargains, or allow yourself some flexibility so you can try something new! However, I often return home to put away my groceries, and then find I did not really get any bargain at all. Grocery Stores Know Psychology! Our brain appears to be susceptible to “signals”, and these signals allow us to be primed to purchase things. You may think that your weekly trip to the market a fairly mindless activity, but this could not be further from the truth! Mark Lindstrom, author of the book Brainwashed, tells us exactly how [...]

Can You Buy Health Food On A Cheapskate Budget? Awhile back we published a popular article about cheap grocery list ideas! While we did not mention it in the title, we tried to emphasize reasonably healthy food. The world, especially the US, seems to have a notion that inexpensive food has to be crappy food. Actually, with the right mindset, the reverse can be very true. A lot of unhealthy, packaged foods will cost you more because of the advertising and brand name. If you do not believe it, just check ou the cereal aisle at your supermarket. Compare the price of brand name kid’s cereal to the cost of regular oatmeal. Even if you add a little honey and fresh fruit to make the oatmeal more appealing, you probably have a better nutrition bargain. Hint: Try bananas, and a little local honey to give the morning oatmeal a lift! Which Grocery Items Are Cheap And Convenient? WebMD has some healthy groceries you can buy for less than $2! You may be turned off because you figure all of these types of inexpensive and healthy foods take a lot of preparation or will be things your family will dislike on [...]

Frugal Moms Do Spill The Beans! That is, we polled some of the most frugal moms we know to get some amazing frugal living ideas! I even have an example from one budget loving mom who feeds her family of 8 on about $100 a week! If you are like me, with a grocery bill that keeps wondering back into triple digits every week, you may be happy to learn some of these tips. They do not involve surviving on beans either, though beans are good food! Take Your Grocery Budget In Cash If you intend to spend, say $150 at the grocery store, put $150 in your wallet. Also bring a calculator along. Remember you may also be taxed on some items depending where you live, so you will have to allow for that. If you are new at this, you may want to slip an extra $20 in the side pocket to avoid embarrassment in the checkout line. When you actually have to enter every item you purchase in the calculator, and when you know that will come out of your stack of money, you will be much more likely to put back impulse purchases and cut back [...]

How Do Grocery People Save Money On Groceries? There are so many tips to save money on groceries. We can cut coupons, shop at warehouse stores, or scan papers for the best sales. But how do people who work in the grocery business suggest we save money on our food bills? Just as an aside, coupon site RetailMeNot.com conducted a survey, and found that 1 / 3 people who responded would not pay retail. They said they would wait for a sale or travel to another store to get a cheaper price. That is a larger number than I would have expected, though I also suspect that people who visit coupon sites are very serious shoppers. But honestly, time is money. If I need to purchase my family’s groceries for the week, I want to get most of it done in one store in one trip. If I have to spend three times as long chasing after the very lowest price, I have to factor that time into how much I have, or have not, actually saved on my bill. Store Loyalty Programs My local grocer has a great loyalty program. I usually save about 10% or more off of [...]

Your Cheap Grocery Lists Do you keep spending more money at the grocery store than you can afford? Lots of us enter the supermarket with a budget in mind, but somehow, we keep spending more than we should. Others have no idea how to organize their shopping around a budget. Should You Make A Grocery List? I think that some sort of notes are useful, but I would not advise using a firm list. In order to be an efficient grocery shopper, you will probably want to jot down some staples you are running out of or the basics for some of your routine meals. However, part of our tactic to save money at the store involves shopping seasonal specials and sale items. While you may need to remind yourself to buy milk, you may not want to specify exact types of fruit, vegetables, or meat. Here’s where you can save money. Cheap Staples I find it easy to be a frugal shopper when I plan to purchase some basic grocery staples that can be mixed and matched for snacks and favorite meals. As a working mom, I also want healthy and convenient meals to prepare on short notice. Beans [...]

Fast Food At Home Saves Time and Money! I read some frugal food advice today on one of the mega websites, and it was actually one of my good habits. If you find that you are eating out a lot just because you lack the time or energy to prepare meals at home, it may be time to turn your kitchen into your very own fast food restaurant. By that, I do not mean you should install a deep fryer or burger grill. But what I mean is that it is not that hard to take some time every week or two to prepare some handy meals that can be frozen and finished off in minutes. Some people hesitate to do this becauise the kids do not like leftovers, or because they are afraid the menu will get boring. But with some experience and creativity, you can solve these problems so that nobody will even know you are pulling prepared food from the freezer or fridge! A lot of meals can be pre-prepared and frozen. If you are making a stir-fry, pasta, baked chicken, or a roast, why not double or triple the recipe. You can store the extra meals in [...]

Grilling Goes Green With Vegetables! One great way to reduce the costs of your popular barbecued meals is by relying more on the produce section instead of the meat section. Of course, the vegetarians in your family will appreciate this. But the budget watchers in your family will appreciate it too! You can use these ideas for the 4th of July, Labor Day, or any time you want to have a cook out! Grilling Vegetables and Fruit So you may be wondering what tastes good cooked on the grill or smoker. Well, if you have not tried it, you may be in for a real treat! We got some of these ideas from here – 4th of July Vegetarian Grill – and some from other experiences with Asian grilling and cooking. By placing more emphasis on grilled vegetables and fruit, and less on meat, you should be able to save money and promote a greener and more humane diet too. Consider slices of sweet potato, placed on the rack or stuck on skewers. Honestly, I think these are so full of natural flavor, you really can eat them plain. But a dab of margarine, butter, or olive oil is nice. [...]
