How Much Money Will You Need For Retirement? Of course, the exact amount of retirement savings that you will need in order to retire comfortably is really hard to predict! This number will also be different for different people. Some things that will affect your own estimates will be your expenses, lifestyle, plans, and other retirement income. Retirement Savings Calculator Instead of just making some wild guesses, it may be more informative to figure out how well you would do with your current level of savings. This retirement savings calculator is a very handy and instructive tool for basic calculations. Note: The calculator assumes you have a tax deferred retirement account, but it is still useful for estimates even if you don’t. For awhile, everybody jumped on the IRA bandwagon in order to save tax money today. Now, some savers decide to pay taxes today so they will not be due in the future. An Example Of Retirement Savings Calculations At Work Let us assume, for an illustration, that you are 45 years old and would like to retire at 65 years old. That means you have 20 years left to save. We will also give you a break and [...]

How The Frugal Rich Are Different When you think about millionaires and billionaires, you probably conjure up an image of a mansion and a huge garage full of sports cars. There are certainly celebrity rich people who act like this. But far more millionaires, and even some billionaires, keep a very low profile and conduct their day to day life in a fairly frugal manner. This is particularly true of self made wealthy people who rose from the ranks of the middle class. Part of the reason they reached their wealth goals is that they made a habit of using money for important things, and they did not waste it. Drive A Regular Car For A Long Time The frugal rich may spend money to purchase a reliable vehicle in the first place, and they certainly do not cut back on service to that vehicle. However, they are likely to buy something nice and sturdy like a Volvo, and not a fancy sports car. Do you know how much money you can save by just hanging on to a vehicle long after the last payment was made. Now think about how much money you save if you could pay cash! [...]

One of the most frequently asked questions that the PIG gets are good tips and tricks to save money at home. We put our cheapest heads together to come up with ten ways to save money at home. Of course, these ideas had to fit our normal criteria of being fairly easy to do and sensible enough for everybody! 10 Ways To Save Money! Keep A Change Jar: When you are doing the laundry, cleaning under the sofa cushions, or rearranging things on your dresser, you are bound to find lots of loose pennies, nickels, quarters, dimes, half dollars, etc. If you establish a change jar in the house, you need never find yourself totally broke again. I do not advise using those change machines in the grocery store because they charge a hefty fee though. Some banks will still count your change for free. This is a nice amenity! Plan Out Errands And Shopping Trips To Save Fuel: If you are the family shopper, please poll everybody ahead of time for their wish list at the store. Also, do your best to make a list of things you really need. This can save additional trips so you do not [...]

Americans Are Not Saving Cash Here is some grim news. A recent Time Magazine article pointed out some sad facts about how Americans save some money for emergencies. About one quarter of Americans say they could not come up with $2,000 within 30 days at all. Another 19 percent said they would have to pawn or sell something in order to come up with the cash. I find this pretty scary. Pain At The Dentist A few years back, my child got two teeth knocked out in an accident. I arrived at the dentist, with dental insurance, but he still needed a thousand bucks of cash on the spot before he would perform the best treatment of rebuilding the teeth. If I had not had the money, the dentist would have pulled the teeth, solving the emergency, but leaving my son with a gaping hole in his smile. In this case, I did not have time to call relatives or run out and try to pawn something. I needed to be able to write a check, swipe a debit card, or in the worst case, use a credit card. I try to use my credit card as little as possible, [...]

Are You Paying Yourself First? Wow, my parents gave me some really good advice that I keep forgetting to follow. They always said, Pay Yourself First! They also said that a secure life was not so much about what you saved, but what you earned. This may seem trite advice, belonging to another generation. However, if you examine the lives of some regular people who have secure amounts of money socked away, you will see they naturally followed these oldies but goodies! You have all seen some examples of amazing effects of compounded savings. If you do not have enough retirement savings socked away, or worse yet, you do not even have a good emergency fund, it really is time to evaluate the way you have been handling money. I am aware that many people are without income these days, and that is probably no time to worry about future savings, but it may be time to decide to change once that new job does come along. Examples Of Modest Savings Adding Up It is also a bad time to present amazing examples of savings with CDs (Certificates of Deposit) or regular savings account since interest rates are so low. [...]

Simple Steps For Saving Money Saving money for something special or for a rainy day is no doubt, important. But many people are finding it difficult to save money and lower their bills or debts. It is possible to still have the things you want while saving up for something big or just for the time when trouble arises. Negotiate Your Bills The first step is to take a good look at your bills. Are you paying too much into your insurance policy? This is the first place most people should check, especially for health insurance and car insurance. If you pay car insurance 1 year at a time you save considerably more than a monthly or 6 month plan. Health insurance can be lowered if you are healthy and maintain lower cholesterol levels and avoid health problems in your age group. Be sure to inquire about these things to save extra. Change Your Diet Chock meat out of your diet. Eating a vegetarian diet can lower grocery bills or save families $4,000 a year! Reducing your consumption of meat to once a week or eliminating it entirely can save you a healthy chunk of change. To see just how [...]

Need Some Quotes On Saving Money By Famous People? The next time you need some inspiration to pack away your credit cards, or just a good line to use on your kids, you can consult these famous quotes on being frugal! Ben Franklin was pretty well known for his thouughts on the subject. A penny saved is a penny earned If you would be wealthy, think of saving as well as getting - I like the last one, and my own dad always said, “It’s not how much you make. It’s how much you save.” This is similar advice, and as a teen, of course, it always annoyed me. Now I just wish I had paid more attention earlier. :) Sir Henry Taylor also had some words on the subect. The art of living easily as to money is to pitch your scale of living one degree below your means. That should strike a chord with many people, especially these days. Samuel Johnson, the English poet and critic had some very sage advice too. Without frugality none can be rich. With it, few would be poor. So you have a favorite Frugal Living Quotes?
Office Lunches are a Big Money Leak I know tha when I worked in an office that was far from home, enjoying lunch out was something I really looked forward to. I needed that break from my cubicle or office, and it was also nice to get together with coworkers to bond a little bit. But those lunches out got expensive. That $5 a day started turning into $10 a day or more. So when my budget got tight, it was hard to justify spending $200 a month on lunch time restaurant meals. Office Lunch Clubs So here’s a great alternative to brown bagging that is popping up all over. Most work areas do have a lunch area with a fridge and microwave. So lunch clubs are forming. Each member is assigned days to bring lunch. That day, they provide the lunch for the other group members. For example, if there are 5 members of your group, you can simply assign each person a M-F day. If you have 10 members, you might either assign an every-other week schedule, or you might assign one person to bring paper goods and drinks, while the other person brings food. This does not [...]

Simple Ways to Save Money This Month on Bills Is there anybody you know who doesn’t want to save more money? Everybody I talk to feels the pressure from the recent economic downturn. The banks are paying a lot less interest on our savings accounts and CDs while they are charging a lot more for our credit card debt. Many of us have watched our retirement account values sink while our jobs and businesses have become less stable. So what we need are some way to reduce our monthly bills so we can save money every month. Our List of Ways to Save Money This Month (that you probably aren’t doing). Car Insurance: This is one bill that most of us have to pay so it should be a logical place to start saving money. If you have not compared insurance quotes for awhile, you probably can save money on insurance by doing some competitive shopping. Sure, most of us need auto policies, but it is also a very competitive business. Gym Memberships: Are you even using that fancy gym membership you purchased for your New Year’s resolution. Maybe now that the weather is starting to get nicer, in the [...]

Multiple $1 Into 70,000! Can you save a buck a day? This is a great exercise to do with older kids, but I know many frugal adults who do it too. Get a jar, and then scoop out your change every day. This includes any change you find on the floor or in the laundry or in your couch. Try to make sure you put at least $1 in the jar every day. At the end of the month you should have about $30. Now it is time to find a bank that has a coin machine, so you can take that jar down to the bank and deposit it into a savings account. If you use a coin sorter at the grocery star, like a Coin Star Machine, they usually charge a very high amount for their service. The one by me takes 8%, which is quite a lot. But I have a nearby bank which lets me do it for free. Even without interest, that $1 a day or $30 a month, is $360 a year. With interest, even at 3 percent interest, you should have over $4,000 at the end of 10 years. If you can get your [...]
