Who Benefits From Bad Times? Well America, it looks like Happy Times are not exactly here again. But even the worst economic downturns in history have produced winners as well as losers. Do not misunderstand my tone. Nobody would like to regain the value of a retirement fund more than I would. It is just very important to point out that downturns can also open up windows of opportunity as well as financial hardship. Let us revisit history in order to try and understand the present. Great Depression Success Stories During the great depression, many companies that continued to aggressively promote their products or services did very well. While other firms cut back because of decreased spending, these companies took the opportunity to advertise a lot. For these companies, when the going got tough, it was no time for the tough to back down! People who have cash or a supply of inexpensive credit tend to be able to take advantage of economic downturns. So, in addition to advertising, companies and individuals who could take advantage of cheaper prices (deflation) could take advantage of investments or personal purchases. Some Things Are Cheaper Now Because Of The Recession While some things, [...]

Frugal Business Ideas To Run Your Business On A Shoestring! We all need to watch our expenses these days, and so we polled some master cheapskates for great ways to run a business without straining balance sheets. If paying high office rent has got you down, here are some ways to cut or eliminate that expense. Virtual Office or Executive Suite - There are a number of creative ways to avoid office rent, or at least avoid as much rent as possible. The idea of some sort of office sharing arrangement is popular with people who travel a lot, work at client sites, or work from a home office. Use an executive suite or virtual office instead of a permanent location. This can provide a lot of the benefits of having an actual commercial location but slash your rent costs a lot. Learn more about virtual offices and executive suites for small or home businesses. Sometimes these arrangements can benefit larger businesses too. Avoid Office Rent With An Office You Own – Instead of paying rent, consider buying an office. You do not have to spend millions of dollars to construct an office either. But you could be spending your money [...]

Start a Frugal Business Helping Other People Be Frugal One great idea for a low cost business start up, that actually does well during tough economic times, is a thrift shop. There is a famous article and ebook on tgtbt.com about a woman who started her thrift shop for the $900 she had left in her bank account after she lost her job. And there was a happy ending because she had her business in the black within 6 weeks! This business was started quite a few years ago, and $900 does not go as far as it used to go. But there are ways to start this type of consignment or resale shop for every little money, and there are some ways to do it for even less than a grand. Finding Space for Your Thrift Shop Ok, rent and a rental security deposit may eat up a lot of your seed money. It will be best, of course, to place your business where you have plenty of exposure and parking. However, you may save a lot by getting a location just a bit off the main roads, and then making sure people can find it with your promotion. [...]

When will The Recession End? Just when we thought things were getting a bit better, the US economy is showing some alarming symptoms of staying in the pits! After almost half a million jobs were cut in June, 2009, the jobless rate is at 9.5 percent. Folks, that is getting really close to 10 percent, and that number probably does not take into account many millions of people who are underemployed or who have just given up on the job hunt for right now. The Worst May Still Be To Come Many economists do predict that the unemployment rate will hit 10 percent this year, and perhaps peak out at 11 percent, until companies are certain that the nation’s economy is stable and they can begin hiring more people again. And the grim jobs data has also started pulling the stock market back down. Bad news does that. This is a time for people to hang on. Online Work For Jobless People Meanwhile, as desperate job seekers lurk on the internet, make sure you keep an eye out of online job scams. That is not to say you cannot find plenty of legitimate online work though. Look at some online [...]
