What Are Second Chance Loans? When most people refer to second chance loans, they are usually talking about some sort of loan that can help people with bad credit. This may mean that the person, with poor credit, can get financing. Even more important than the financing may be the chance to rebuild credit so poor credit scores can turn back into good credit scores. If you have had some credit issues in the past, you may still be able to get another chance to get financing and build your credit rating back up. While there are actually lots of second chance loan options, some are better than others. In any case, it is very important to use your second chance wisely so you do not end up with even bigger problems. Bad Credit Peer To Peer Loans Of course, peer loans are probably the oldest type of loans in the world. With true person to person loans, you may try to get your family or friends to finance you. These days, peer lending sites actually connect thousands of potential lenders with thousands of potential borrowers. Of course, these lending sites present an opportunity for people with all different types [...]

Start Your Financially Fit New Year! Most of us make the same tedious resolutions every New Years. We are going to lose weight, get fit, and eat right. That usually does not work out that well, so how about trying a new resolution? Let’s all get more financially fit in 20112 Steps Towards More Financial Fitness This Year The failure to plan is planning to fail. Most success comes from having some sort of plan. This exercise will not always be about meeting every goal at 100 percent, but in striving to get better. If you only added $1,000 to your retirement account last year, may you could plan to double that this year. If you only make it to $1,500, you will still have improved, even if you have not met your goal. Short And Long Term Financial Goals Set some goals. Short term goals could be the establishment, or increase, of an emergency savings fund. Remember our post about how most Americans could not lay their hands on $2,000? Make removing yourself from this group a priority. Long term goals could be more about saving for education, retirement, or a different home. Pay Yourself First! If you do [...]

Who Is Rich In The US? We already published an article about what income group is considered middle class. We also established that most people in the US think of themselves as middle class, regardless if we would think of them as rich or poor. Are you rich, poor, or middle class? How much money do you think it would take to consider yourself rich? Because, after all, your own perception of your financial state is what matters a lot. There is no doubt that some individuals, and families, consider themselves financially secure on very modest incomes. Other people, and families, barely make ends meet on incomes that seem huge to the rest of us! Let’s visit some statistics from the US Tax Policy Center. I am using household incomes, so these numbers could represent incomes from 1, 2, or even more income earners in the same home. It is interesting to note that the highest incomes come from households that file as married, filing jointly. Households that file as “head of household” (i.e. single parents) come in second, while single filers make the least. The Top 20 Percent Is the top twenty percent rich. If so, a household income [...]

The Anti-Consumerism Movement Gone Extreme! If the recession has taught Americans anything useful, it seems to have made it a lot more trendy to be frugal. Thrift stores, recycling, and do-it-yourself projects have become mainstream, and even, trendy! I do not believe many people would argue that these are positive steps, and a lot of Americans are beginning to realize that it is a lot better to re-use, recycle, do without, increase savings, and avoid debt. I, myself, take small steps. My steps to becoming more frugal are probably the common ones. In my opinion, frugality is a way to enjoy life more because I spend less of my time working just to sustain a lifestyle that does not really make me happy! I have become more frugal, but like most people, I have no been able to embrace something called extreme frugality. Have you? Baby Steps Towards A More Frugal Lifestyle I make sure my retirement account gets an automatic contribution every month. I have become more disciplined about adding money to my emergency savings account because that helps me avoid adding debt when I do need to visit the dentist, auto repair shop, or appliance store. I have [...]

Why Buy Precious Metals On EBay? If you are a small investor, online auction sites like EBay may be great places to pick up fractional coins or bullion bars. When you can only afford to spend $100 a month, a 1/10 ounce gold coin or bag of “junk” silver may be your best option. Because EBay sellers may enjoy a low overhead compared to large dealers, they may be able to sell in small quantities with reasonable shipping and/or handling charges. Tips To Buy Silver Or Gold Safety Hot markets always seem to bring crooks out of the woodwork. As a potential buyer, you must try to protect yourself as much as possible. I have collected some of the best tips from EBay itself, my own experience, and other buyer’s. These are not some secret silver and gold buying tips, but mostly common sense. Know The Market! You need to have a really good idea of the current value of any purchases you are considering. For example, if you want to buy $25 worth of 90% US silver coins, you should know the current value of US silver coins! You may use this free US silver coin value calculator in [...]

The US June job news was bad enough, but careful analysis shows that it may even be worse than first advertised. If the jobless rate is still high, and even climbing in some months, how are we out of a recession? If the US economy is still bleeding jobs, how can anybody declare the end of hard times? According to the NY Times, the economy lost almost half a million more jobs in June of 2011, and the jobless rate is creeping up to about 9.5%. Of course, this published unemployment rate is, in my opinion, a bit low. It never takes into account millions of people who are underemployed or who have just given up looking for a job. The US labor departments argues that things are getting better. Not all of the stimulus money has been put to work yet, some is taking awhile to work, and overall, the rate of job loss has slowed down a bit. It is hard to take away a lot of optimism from this after all this time. There may also be some other positive signs. Home prices seem to be reaching a level point, although that price point is much lower [...]

What Is A Normal (Average?) US Household Income in 2011? A Short Statistics Lesson – Statistics can be confusing, and as we all know, they can be manipulated a bit in order to make a point. If you look for the US median household income for 2011, you come up with census figures of a little bit than $50,000. But try to remember your high school math. A median is the number that you get when you throw out the top and bottom fifty percent. It is the number in the middle. This is different than an average. So if you take 5 numbers: 14, 87, 101, 450 and 900, you may illustrate this concept by calculating the average and the median. The average of these numbers is 310, but the median is 101, which is the number in the middle! Average vs. Median Incomes I do find it interesting to mention that it is much easier to find US data on the median income, of about $50,000, than it is to find the average income. That may be because the median figure is higher than the average, especially when you factor out the top 10% of earners. Yes, We [...]

This is a guest post from Hunter at SoftwareAdvice.com ————————————————————————————- I’ve written a new review over at Software Advice about the best iPhone apps for personal finance, budgeting, and expense tracking. I spent hours upon hours looking at apps in the iTunes store to come up with a list of the most useful apps. It’s easy to lose track of one’s spending habits, and just a short lapse in judgment can easily lead to financial disaster. Staying on top of things requires dedication – it’s not always easy. But the simplified interface and on-the-go availability of apps makes the process much easier. There are iPhone apps for nearly everything, and individual finance has its share as well. Being able to record expenses on the go could really make things easier for those of us with short attention spans and impulsive wallets. Whether you’re a CPA, small business owner, or just a regular guy, there’s an appropriate app that can help. I found apps for a wide variety of functions, from expense tracking and budgeting to more unique financial management needs. If you need a tool to help your debt payment strategy, take a look at Debt Snowball Pro or Pay [...]

Do College Students Need Renters Insurance? If your college student is renting an off-campus apartment or house while away at school consider purchasing renters insurance to protect their personal property, such as a computer, television, stereo, bicycle or furniture, in the event that it is damaged, destroyed or stolen. Your homeowners insurance may not cover your student’s personal property, if he or she lives off campus. Parents should check their policy or contact their insurance agent to see if renters insurance is right for their son or daughter who is away at school. The premiums for renter’s insurance average between $15 and $30 per month depending on the location and size of the rental unit and the policyholder’s possessions. If your student has one or several roommates in their off-campus housing, they may be able to purchase a renters insurance policy together. The previous link goes to a page with more information and online renters insurance quote forms. Students and parents may think that the landlord’s insurance will cover personal property in the event that it is stolen or damaged as a result of a fire, theft or other unexpected circumstance but it does not.
Cash For Gold? Sure, you can get cash for your gold. Just be sure you are also getting a fair price for this valuable commodity. Since the price of gold has been rising so much in the past several months, the precious metal has gotten a lot of attention. With all this attention, all of the usual suspects have popped out to buy and sell gold. I am not against buying or selling gold as part of a frugal investment strategy. I am opposed to people getting ripped off on both ends! Gold and silver buyers have been with us for at least the last 5,000 years. Large deals were performed on commodities markets and exchanges. Smaller deals may have been made at a coin dealer or broker’s office. But fast forward to today’s market. This seems aimed at smaller buyers and sellers. What’s New In Gold Buying and Selling? Gold Parties – This reminds me of Tupperware parties. People meet at a host house. A gold buyer is there to offer cash for old jewelry, coins, and other gold that average people may have in their homes. Gold On TV Ads – Some of the most popular networks and news shows [...]
