What Are Second Chance Loans? When most people refer to second chance loans, they are usually talking about some sort of loan that can help people with bad credit. This may mean that the person, with poor credit, can get financing. Even more important than the financing may be the chance to rebuild credit so poor credit scores can turn back into good credit scores. If you have had some credit issues in the past, you may still be able to get another chance to get financing and build your credit rating back up. While there are actually lots of second chance loan options, some are better than others. In any case, it is very important to use your second chance wisely so you do not end up with even bigger problems. Bad Credit Peer To Peer Loans Of course, peer loans are probably the oldest type of loans in the world. With true person to person loans, you may try to get your family or friends to finance you. These days, peer lending sites actually connect thousands of potential lenders with thousands of potential borrowers. Of course, these lending sites present an opportunity for people with all different types [...]

Peer To Peer Loan Sites Just as the name implies, peer to peer loans are made to individuals by individuals. This means that traditional financial institutions have been bypassed. The saver (investor) chooses which loans to fund. The hopeful borrower gets to make a case that he or she is a good candidate for a loan. If you are interested, you can learn more about the advantages of peer to peer lending here. People have always gotten peer to peer loans by asking friend or family for help with financing. But I am discussing the new peer to peer loan sites, like Prosper, that actually serve as a sort of financial-EBay for this sort of thing. The sites do collect a small fee each time a loan payment is made. In return, they provide the active business center, and also do some preliminary credit checks on borrowers. How Can Peer To Peer Loans Inprove Your Credit Score If you have a bad credit, or even average credit scores, you may be able to benefit from using this sort of social lending service. You may be able to obtain cheaper rates, and you may also be able to improve your credit scores quickly.
Credit Misuse Is The Problem Having a credit card is not the problem with most people who get into financial trouble. Misuse of credit cards is usually on of the problems though! If you handle your credit cards the right way, they can improve your financial security and comfort. If you misuse them, they can make you miserable. At the Frugal Pig, we are quite aware that stuff happens. There may be cases where misuse is warranted, but they should probably fall in the category of absolutely needing to fix your car so you can get to work, or needing dental servies right now. If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation, previous credit card misuse, over frivolous things, will only make your situation worse. But mostly, the difference between a mediocre and a great credit score, comes down to small things. You can pay all of your bills on time, have money in the bank, and still be paying too much for credit. Maxing Out Your Cards (Or Coming Close) If you are constantly charging, and making low payments, you will find yourself coming close to using up your available credit. You may even charge an amount that [...]

Start Your Financially Fit New Year! Most of us make the same tedious resolutions every New Years. We are going to lose weight, get fit, and eat right. That usually does not work out that well, so how about trying a new resolution? Let’s all get more financially fit in 20112 Steps Towards More Financial Fitness This Year The failure to plan is planning to fail. Most success comes from having some sort of plan. This exercise will not always be about meeting every goal at 100 percent, but in striving to get better. If you only added $1,000 to your retirement account last year, may you could plan to double that this year. If you only make it to $1,500, you will still have improved, even if you have not met your goal. Short And Long Term Financial Goals Set some goals. Short term goals could be the establishment, or increase, of an emergency savings fund. Remember our post about how most Americans could not lay their hands on $2,000? Make removing yourself from this group a priority. Long term goals could be more about saving for education, retirement, or a different home. Pay Yourself First! If you do [...]

Who Is Rich In The US? We already published an article about what income group is considered middle class. We also established that most people in the US think of themselves as middle class, regardless if we would think of them as rich or poor. Are you rich, poor, or middle class? How much money do you think it would take to consider yourself rich? Because, after all, your own perception of your financial state is what matters a lot. There is no doubt that some individuals, and families, consider themselves financially secure on very modest incomes. Other people, and families, barely make ends meet on incomes that seem huge to the rest of us! Let’s visit some statistics from the US Tax Policy Center. I am using household incomes, so these numbers could represent incomes from 1, 2, or even more income earners in the same home. It is interesting to note that the highest incomes come from households that file as married, filing jointly. Households that file as “head of household” (i.e. single parents) come in second, while single filers make the least. The Top 20 Percent Is the top twenty percent rich. If so, a household income [...]

How Much Money Will You Need For Retirement? Of course, the exact amount of retirement savings that you will need in order to retire comfortably is really hard to predict! This number will also be different for different people. Some things that will affect your own estimates will be your expenses, lifestyle, plans, and other retirement income. Retirement Savings Calculator Instead of just making some wild guesses, it may be more informative to figure out how well you would do with your current level of savings. This retirement savings calculator is a very handy and instructive tool for basic calculations. Note: The calculator assumes you have a tax deferred retirement account, but it is still useful for estimates even if you don’t. For awhile, everybody jumped on the IRA bandwagon in order to save tax money today. Now, some savers decide to pay taxes today so they will not be due in the future. An Example Of Retirement Savings Calculations At Work Let us assume, for an illustration, that you are 45 years old and would like to retire at 65 years old. That means you have 20 years left to save. We will also give you a break and [...]

The Anti-Consumerism Movement Gone Extreme! If the recession has taught Americans anything useful, it seems to have made it a lot more trendy to be frugal. Thrift stores, recycling, and do-it-yourself projects have become mainstream, and even, trendy! I do not believe many people would argue that these are positive steps, and a lot of Americans are beginning to realize that it is a lot better to re-use, recycle, do without, increase savings, and avoid debt. I, myself, take small steps. My steps to becoming more frugal are probably the common ones. In my opinion, frugality is a way to enjoy life more because I spend less of my time working just to sustain a lifestyle that does not really make me happy! I have become more frugal, but like most people, I have no been able to embrace something called extreme frugality. Have you? Baby Steps Towards A More Frugal Lifestyle I make sure my retirement account gets an automatic contribution every month. I have become more disciplined about adding money to my emergency savings account because that helps me avoid adding debt when I do need to visit the dentist, auto repair shop, or appliance store.
Is Your Credit Score Good? I have already discussed the importance of a good credit score. When you have good credit, life is cheaper and easier. If you ever do need to borrow money, lenders will not charge as much because they do not think they are taking a big risk. Even if you do not need to borrow money, some services are easier to come by when your credit is good. What is NOT helping most of us is that the definition of a good credit score keeps creeping up, especially during this era of tight lending rules. CreditKarma says that average US credit score is the same as the number of the beast: 666. That is average, and it probably is not that great by today’s standards. In fact, a credit score just a bit lower is probably the line between getting credit approved and not getting credit approved. By this, we are talking about all sorts of things from mortgages, auto loans, or any type of unsecured credit. So if your AC kicks out or your dog needs to go to the vet, a 660 will probably get you credit for these services. Anything lower may give [...]

Why Buy Precious Metals On EBay? If you are a small investor, online auction sites like EBay may be great places to pick up fractional coins or bullion bars. When you can only afford to spend $100 a month, a 1/10 ounce gold coin or bag of “junk” silver may be your best option. Because EBay sellers may enjoy a low overhead compared to large dealers, they may be able to sell in small quantities with reasonable shipping and/or handling charges. Tips To Buy Silver Or Gold Safety Hot markets always seem to bring crooks out of the woodwork. As a potential buyer, you must try to protect yourself as much as possible. I have collected some of the best tips from EBay itself, my own experience, and other buyer’s. These are not some secret silver and gold buying tips, but mostly common sense. Know The Market! You need to have a really good idea of the current value of any purchases you are considering. For example, if you want to buy $25 worth of 90% US silver coins, you should know the current value of US silver coins! You may use this free US silver coin value calculator in [...]

Who Benefits From Bad Times? Well America, it looks like Happy Times are not exactly here again. But even the worst economic downturns in history have produced winners as well as losers. Do not misunderstand my tone. Nobody would like to regain the value of a retirement fund more than I would. It is just very important to point out that downturns can also open up windows of opportunity as well as financial hardship. Let us revisit history in order to try and understand the present.
